Summary

I had enjoyed "The weeping girl" so thought I would give this a go。 Although badged as an Inspector Barbarotti book Barbarotti does not appear until page 185。 This story is set in Sweden and has been translated into English。 The first part of the book deals with a family of three generations in the run up to Christmas and although there is some humour I found the tensions within the family a bit depressing。 This part of the book ends with two members of the family a son and a grandson being repo I had enjoyed "The weeping girl" so thought I would give this a go。 Although badged as an Inspector Barbarotti book Barbarotti does not appear until page 185。 This story is set in Sweden and has been translated into English。 The first part of the book deals with a family of three generations in the run up to Christmas and although there is some humour I found the tensions within the family a bit depressing。 This part of the book ends with two members of the family a son and a grandson being reported to the police as missing persons。 Barbarotti does not have much success in finding out what happened until a gruesome discovery is made many months later。 However this still leaves much unexplained。 The last part of the book deals with the suspicions of the family and there is some tension as the reader expects that there will be, at least, one more death。 This is a well written book but really was not the sort of book I like to read as I found it very sad。 However I imagine many people will find much to enjoy here so don't let my marking put you off。 。。。more

I bought this book on an impulse at a book fair 2 weeks ago, the Sinopse looked interesting, so I decided to give it a try。 And these are my opinions: POSITIVE~ I actually liked the first 200 pages, the family drama was interesting, but sometimes a bit irrelevant to the whole plot, but fun nonetheless;~There were some funny sentences from the characters, that actually made me laugh and think "what the hell am I reading?" like this one: Tomorrow I shall look my mother in the eye, he decided。 T I bought this book on an impulse at a book fair 2 weeks ago, the Sinopse looked interesting, so I decided to give it a try。 And these are my opinions: POSITIVE~ I actually liked the first 200 pages, the family drama was interesting, but sometimes a bit irrelevant to the whole plot, but fun nonetheless;~There were some funny sentences from the characters, that actually made me laugh and think "what the hell am I reading?" like this one: Tomorrow I shall look my mother in the eye, he decided。 Tell her not to to cry over spilt semen (I mean milk, for Christ's sake, milk!)。。。" NEGATIVE~This book is too descriptive。。。 I really don't care how much was the inspector Barbarotti's weight when he was born or how many women he had, it's too much unnecessary information;~The main thing that bothered me in this book were the crimes (a really big deal since this is supposed to be a crime book)。 The moment the family members disappeared, I knew what had happened to them because it was quite obvious。 I kept waiting for some kind of plot twist, but there were none, so I read the second part of the book already knowing how it would end and felt really disappointed。Overall Opinion:It was a nice read if you have some time to spare。 It'll make you laugh quite a bit in some parts, but there won't be many surprises。 The main surprise is which family members disappear and that's it。 I think it's a book worth reading once for the experience, but I know I won't ever re-read it。 。。。more

A weird start to a new series。 200 pages before the detective arrives on the scene。 200 pages of a dysfunctional family getting together for a birthday celebration。 Two go missing on successive nights and it if fairly obvious what happened。 A saccharine story of stereotypical middle class people。

Another great read from this Swedish crime writer。 The story starts in a quiet Swedish town just before Christmas; two members of the same family disappear over the weekend。

Very enjoyable murder mystery set in Sweden。 Unusually it's a long way into the novel before anyone realises that the two victims, both members of a family who are reuniting around a double-birthday celebration, are missing and that anything untoward has happened。 The Hermansson family are not particularly close and there are plenty of tensions amongst the family members, not the least being the recent public exposure of 35 year old son (brother and uncle) Robert caught masturbating's whilst app Very enjoyable murder mystery set in Sweden。 Unusually it's a long way into the novel before anyone realises that the two victims, both members of a family who are reuniting around a double-birthday celebration, are missing and that anything untoward has happened。 The Hermansson family are not particularly close and there are plenty of tensions amongst the family members, not the least being the recent public exposure of 35 year old son (brother and uncle) Robert caught masturbating's whilst appearing on a reality TV show。 To say that his father takes this badly is an understatement, but there are longstanding difficulties in the relationships beyond this and Robert's fall from grace is just the most recent。 When Robert disappears there are no immediate alarm bells - it's put down to just another example of his irresponsible behaviour, and his father is very unwilling to subject the family to further publicity。 But when golden grandson, 19 year old Henrik also disappears the following night, something must be done and Inspector Gunnar Barbarotti, who is looking for an excuse to avoid Christmas celebrations with this ex-in laws, is called in。But the cases remain unsolved for months, frustrating the police and the family。 As time passes, secrets are revealed and finally one of the victims is found。 His funeral is the catalyst for revealing clues which propel the case of the other missing person forward。An enjoyable read which kept me turning the pages and mostly guessing until the end。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The most disappointing book of the year。 Yes, I am sure, although it's only May。The beginning was rather slow, but in a pleasant way, I really liked the style of writing and got interested in the story。When two members of the same family disappear within a short period of time, do the cases have to be connected somehow? No one knew。 Not the reader, not the police and, I swear I believe it, not even the author himself。 I felt as if he sent the first few chapters to the publisher, got accepted and The most disappointing book of the year。 Yes, I am sure, although it's only May。The beginning was rather slow, but in a pleasant way, I really liked the style of writing and got interested in the story。When two members of the same family disappear within a short period of time, do the cases have to be connected somehow? No one knew。 Not the reader, not the police and, I swear I believe it, not even the author himself。 I felt as if he sent the first few chapters to the publisher, got accepted and then had no idea how to write the rest。Oh, and do you know that trick in the thrillers, where you get some chapters about a mystery person - you know he/she is the killer but you're supposed to think you don't know them? And then it is revealed that this person indeed is the killer, but it's also one of the characters you've been reading about?I hate it。 But this book showed me, I can hate it even more。 Here, the person you read about is the killer and you also haven't heard about her earlier。 What a thrill! She also dies by accident and that's how her crimes are discovered。 Mix that with:- lengthy conversations about the same things over and over again (Do you think these cases are connected? No idea, but how's your love Life? Could be better, but, you know what? They're either connected or they're not。) - the fact that both cases are solved by accident, without any police involvement whatsoever- strange, unbelievable motive for one murder- spoiled suspense (so much!) - loose ends and you get, well, what you get。 A total disappointment。 Squared。 The only reason it's not a one star review is the style and sense of humor from the beginning of the book and the detective's relationship with God。 It's strange, but I actually liked Mr。 Barbarotti, even though the mystery got solved without him。 But it might be my soft spot for all things Italian。 Not enough, though, to make me like an unmysterious book like this。 。。。more

When was the last time you found yourself flipping ahead to see what happens next? I did that many times in this dark tale of multiple murders and a seriously fucked-up family。 The plot is chockfull of delicious red herrings that really keep you on your toes。 Barbarotti is a very sympathetic hero-0detective。

NOT a Barbarotti book at all!The Darkest Day is a strange mystery in that the book focuses more upon what is going on psychologically within the Hermansson family to solve the mysteries (two murders within their family within two days in holidays before Christmas) than upon Police Inspector Barbarotti's attempts to solve the mysteries。 This book touched me deeply even though I did not care much for any of the members of this family: the parents and their three young adult children。 The two siste NOT a Barbarotti book at all!The Darkest Day is a strange mystery in that the book focuses more upon what is going on psychologically within the Hermansson family to solve the mysteries (two murders within their family within two days in holidays before Christmas) than upon Police Inspector Barbarotti's attempts to solve the mysteries。 This book touched me deeply even though I did not care much for any of the members of this family: the parents and their three young adult children。 The two sisters are married and the elder one, Ebba, has two boys ("golden boy" Henrik and younger Kristoffer) and younger sister Kristina has a toddler。 The son, Robert, is a ne'er do well who has embarrassed the family by being on a Swedish "reality" show and getting caught masturbating on camera。 He becomes known as Wanker Robert。 During the Christmas/birthday party holidays two of the family are lost and assumed murdered。 Solving the mystery takes a long time but Robert's body is finally found almost incidentally when the woman who had murdered him committed suicide。 His body is (gasp, how NOT original!) inside her freezer, chopped up。 But poor Henrik's murder still hangs over the family while we learn of most of the insecurities, guilt, and shame of most of the other family members。 Inspector Barbarotti stews around and occasionally seems to try to solve the mysteries but mostly we learn that he has a tender side and has fallen in love with a middle-aged woman who is showing signs of being "the one" to replace his dead wife。 I found Barbarotti to be a likeable character but am amused at how little we learn about him as an Inspector。 BTW, do the thumb test。 Flip through the pages of the book from front to back (or back to front) and notice how few references there are to Barbarotti versus those to the interminable Hermansson family members。I have, however, now got a list of Hakan Nesser's books and put three of them in my "cart" to buy after I have read more of the two stacks of "yet to reads" in this Scandanavian noir category。 (And a bit more of the serious history/political science reading。) 。。。more

This Swedish crime novel situates its dark deeds within a family setting。 Three generations come together to celebrate the double midwinter birthdays of Karl-Erik, who will be turning 65, and his eldest daughter Ebba, 40。 In disgrace is Ebba’s brother Robert, who has committed a highly embarrassing and newsworthy act while taking part in a reality television show, while at the other end of the spectrum we find Ebba’s son Henrik, always a winner and now a university student for whom great things This Swedish crime novel situates its dark deeds within a family setting。 Three generations come together to celebrate the double midwinter birthdays of Karl-Erik, who will be turning 65, and his eldest daughter Ebba, 40。 In disgrace is Ebba’s brother Robert, who has committed a highly embarrassing and newsworthy act while taking part in a reality television show, while at the other end of the spectrum we find Ebba’s son Henrik, always a winner and now a university student for whom great things are expected。 Another sister, and assorted spouses and children, complete the mix。 The first third of the book is devoted solely to building up a picture of a family whose tensions, frustrations and secrets, while troublesome, appear no worse than those in many others, but gradually the scene darkens, especially when Robert and then, the following night, Henrik, disappear。 Håkan Nesser seems, as in other works, less interested in the investigative side of things than in exploration of various psychological aspects: sexuality, control, vulnerability, guilt。 His detective, Gunnar Barbarotti, is provided with the required back story, but has surprisingly little to do with solving the crime or crimes, while the ending felt rather hastily cobbled together。 That didn’t matter to this reader, who was sufficiently diverted by the untangling of the familial knots。 。。。more

Hokans Nesers ir viens no “ražīgākajiem” Zviedrijas kriminālromānu autoriem - sarakstījis neskaitāmus trillerus vairākās grāmatu sērijās。 Inspektoram Barbaroti veltītas sešas grāmatas, latviski no tām tulkotas pirmās divas。Tā sanāca, ka pirmo izlasīju otro grāmatu “Pavisam cits stāsts” un mani tā aizrāva gan ar Barbaroti tēlu, gan izmeklēšanas reāliju atspoguļojumu。 “Cilvēks bez suņa”, manuprāt, diezgan ievērojami atšķīrās - grāmatas uzbūve, tēlu un notikumu attīstība notika citā ritmā un lasītā Hokans Nesers ir viens no “ražīgākajiem” Zviedrijas kriminālromānu autoriem - sarakstījis neskaitāmus trillerus vairākās grāmatu sērijās。 Inspektoram Barbaroti veltītas sešas grāmatas, latviski no tām tulkotas pirmās divas。Tā sanāca, ka pirmo izlasīju otro grāmatu “Pavisam cits stāsts” un mani tā aizrāva gan ar Barbaroti tēlu, gan izmeklēšanas reāliju atspoguļojumu。 “Cilvēks bez suņa”, manuprāt, diezgan ievērojami atšķīrās - grāmatas uzbūve, tēlu un notikumu attīstība notika citā ritmā un lasītājs par noziegumiem uzzina vēl pirms policijas。Centrā - Hermansonu ģimenes saiets Ziemassvētku laikā, uz kuru ierodas bērni un mazbērni, lai sagaidītu ziemas saulgriežus un nosvinētu divas apaļas jubilejas。 Negaidīti pazūd divi no ģimenes vīriešiem un ne policija, ne ģimene īsti nesaprot, kā tulkot šos mīklainos notikumus。Grāmatā spilgti izgaismotas traģiska notikuma abas puses - gan izmeklēšanas, gan cietušās ģimenes。 Parasti zinām tikai policijas versiju par notikumiem, bet Nesers detalizēti pievēršas arī tiem, kas ir stāsta otrā pusē。 Tāpēc es šo varbūt neierindotu trilleru žanrā, bet vairāk pieskaitītu ģimenes drāmām - jo notikumi risinās lēnām, atspoguļojot visas detaļas pirms un pēc noziegumiem。 Policija un cietusī ģimene atrodas neredzamas virves katra savā galā, tai pa vidu lasītājs - ar apziņu, ka visi drīz vien tāpat satiksies centrā。Kopumā - šis bija, kā angliski saka, “slow burner”, līdz ļoti labam trillerim tomēr kaut kas pietrūka。 Visdrīzāk tā bija intriga。 。。。more
